Training The Older Dog
Many people believe that when a dog moves past the stage of being a puppy that it is a little to late to train him. These beliefs are false. Sure, it may be true that training a pup might be a little easier, but training an older dog can sure be done.
In most instances you will have a little knowledge about the dog going into the training process. In the case that your dog is a stray his background will be unknown. So, if the history of the older dog is unknown it will be crucial that you begin to train your pet in a kind and gentle manner.
Below you will find a few tips to help with your older dog and a few of these tips will prove useful in training a pup
Time To Relearn
Be prepared because your older dog will have picked up some pretty bad habits. Not only will you have a few things to teach him, you are going to have to un-teach him things. Do not forget your patience because right now he does not know right from wrong, but have comfort in knowing that he soon will.
Be ready to catch him right as he starts to do the wrong thing.
Watch Your Tone
A nice firm tone of voice will be your most powerful weapon when you begin to train your older dog, you don’t need to yell though. You will want your dog to think that you are in control, so don’t sound upset or angry. Any time he does something good, smother him with praise and give him a treat.
One Word Commands
Use commands with one word when training pups or dogs of any age. It is simpler for your pet to comprehend words like “stay”,”come”,enough,””down” than it is for him to understand “Go lay down,” “Stay right there” or “Won’t you please just sit down”
The First Time
It is important to know that once your dog understands a command that you expect him to follow through with it. Begging is one thing that you should not do. This one is important. When you call your dog over to you, and he pretends that you do not exist, calmly walk over to him and bring him to you, and if he does come lavish him with praise. Anytime you have your dog 4 or 5 times to follow a command it won’t be long before it is 5 or6 so it is very important to get to the point of “One Time”.
Good Behavior=Rewards
Here is one thing to be conscious of, rewarding your dog with treats and praise for a job well done will take you where you want to go much faster than punishing him for unacceptable behavior. Any time your dog follows a command that you have given him, shower him with attention and praise.
Positive reinforcement is one of the best tools that you can use to train an older dog or puppy.
Do not let the thought even enter your mind that you will not be able to teach your dog anything. By using correct training methods, it will seem like it took no time at all for your older dog to begin behaving properly.
