Train Labs to Stop Digging

Labradors have and always will be smart dogs that just can’t stand to sit still. Because of this, these dogs have to be given activities to do in order to be happy and well behaved. When a dog doesn’t get the interaction that it needs, it will find a way to entertain itself. Labs often do this by digging. To keep this issue from happening, you have to really understand what causes the issue in the first place.

The primary thing to keep in mind is that it is unnatural for a dog not to dig. Digging may be triggered by a number of things. In the wild, a dog may dig a hole to hide its food, escape the weather or just for entertainment. The first step in making sure your dog doesn’t dig up your yard it to determine what the cause for the digging is.

Let’s Get Started

Is your dog digging a hole to bury a bone or some type of food? Then stop giving your dog these types of things. Another option is to only give your Labrador Retriever food or toys inside the house.

If your dog is laying in the hole it dig, it may be too hot or too cold. If this is the case, give your Labrador a shady area for warm days and a nice warm place to get out of the wind and cold. One of the easiest ways to give your dog shelter is to buy a dog house for her.

Watch to see if your dog is digging to escape. This problem can be a little more difficult to deal with. Labrador Retrievers love to be around other people and animals so they have a tough time being isolated. Your dog may be digging because she is lonely.

There are a few ways you can solve this type of labrador digging problem. Firstly, give your Labrador Retriever lots of exercise. Dogs love “play” exercise - go for a run or thow a ball. When you leave the house, make sure he has a lot of toys to keep her busy.

If nothing else works, try giving your dog a special place to dig. Train her to dig there using treats as a reward. As a last resort, bury chicken wire where your Labrador Retriever likes to dig. She wont like the feel of the wire and will probably stop digging there.

However, not leaving your Labrador is really the best option. Try sectioning off a part of the yard to keep him in when you are out. At least any damage from digging will be in one area

Digging is preventable. It is as simple as figuring out why your dog is digging removing that cause. It doesn’t help to yell at your dog for digging. This just confuses him and makes matters worse. Positive reinforcement is the only thing that will do any good in the long term. Give your dog a lot of play and socialization and you will have a happy dog. Giving your dog a lot of love and positiveness will make you a great dog trainer.
