Parents are often pestered by their kids who want them to get a dog. A dog can be troublesome so many parents try to avoid their kids enthusiasm for pets. In the end the kids may win the argument but it takes a while for them to convince their parents.

Once you have made the decision to get a dog you must choose what breed you want to get. You may find your local dog rescue center has a selection of dogs they would like to find homes for.

Finally you have your new dog at home and the first thing it might do is make a mess on your carpet. Your new dog needs house training before it is safe to be left alone. A clean animal such as a dog will not want a mess near it’s bed so they need to understand where to go to do their business.

A new puppy in a new home is sure to be feeling nervous and won’t know what it is supposed to do to be good. Treat it gently at first but keep a close eye on it and when it looks uncomfortable take it to the potty area immediately. When it does things right give it a lot of affection and tell him what a good dog he is.

Your dog will need a lot of reminding and practice but they are usually pretty quick to learn things. Be very patient and don’t get annoyed about accidents as they will happen and are not done on purpose.

If your puppy needs to get to the potty area he should be able to easily reach it to be successful. If your puppy does things right tell him what a good dog he is and show him lots of affection to reward him. They learn the right thing to do and like getting congratulated so there are less accidents after a while.

Once your dog is house trained you can move on to other training. A puppy will enjoy being trained to sit by your kids. Your kids will enjoy teaching your dog and can play together for hours.

You can move on to further advanced training with your dog once it understands commands like sit and stay. Walking to heel on a leash is an important lesson to teach your dog.

Your dog must not run off to look at new things so it is important you teach it to stay with you.Dogs are fascinated my new things and smells but your dog must wait for your command before it does anything.

Don’t go thinking everyone loves dogs so you should train your dog to behave when visitors arrive. If you love having your dog lick your face remember that other people would hate it.

Becoming a dog owner has rewards but also responsibilities and you take on the duty of care when you get a dog. Your dog must obey your commands so you can prevent it being a nuisance to other people. A well trained dog will behave properly around other people and animals and it will be a credit to you and your family.
