Attract Wild Birds To Your Garden - Some Tips
There are many easy ways to attract wild birds to your garden. Providing them with the food they enjoy and a safe place for them to eat is the easiest way. Bird feeders are ideal for providing food for them. Food is hard to find in the winter so they can be really helpful to the birds at this time.
Attract different species by setting up feeding stations containing their favorite foods. An example of a speciality bird feeder is a thistle bird feeder that holds the seeds that finches love. Tube feeders keep the seeds dry and prevent spillage. A window bird feeder could also be used to watch wild birds feed from the comfort of your home.
Speciality feeders can be bought to attract hummingbirds, goldfinches and woodpeckers. Place them somewhere safe and close to your birdhouse. Mold can grow on damp food so check daily that the food is dry. Pests such as ants and wasps will be attracted to spilled food so clean it up every day.
Birds benefit most from feeding during the winter but food can be scarce in other seasons too. Help the wild birds by providing food for them all through the year. Fledglings can be affected by shortages of food during the breeding season so put out suitable food for them at this time.
Provide them with a safe place to bathe or drink by providing water in pans or a garden bird bath. Provide water at various levels as some birds will prefer water at ground level, others prefer water in containers above the ground. Only fill containers to a few inches and place containers away from bird feeders as birds like quiet places to bathe and preen. Birds will be attracted by the sounds of water running. Attach a water dripper to your bird bath. It will attract the birds and also prevent mosquitoes breeding in the water.
The birds will have a better sense of security if you provide a natural environment. Leaving an area to grow with wild flowers and plants can provide a very attractive area for them.
